A former teacher and guidance counselor at Lourdes Central Catholic is now the Bishop of the Diocese of Fargo in North Dakota. Most Reverend John C. Folda most recently served as the rector of St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward. He is one of the first American bishops appointed by the Holy Father, Pope Francis. The ordination was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Fargo.
Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt, the Archbishop of Minneapolis-St. Paul was the main consecrator. He was assisted by Most Reverend James D. Conley, Bishop of Lincoln, and Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila, Archbishop of Denver and former Bishop of Fargo. Many bishops, priests, and religious from all over the country attended the ceremony, some coming from as far away as Alaska, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico. About sixty priests from the Diocese of Lincoln also attended, including Father McCabe, Father Cyza, and Father Stec from Lourdes. Father Cyza said, "It is very sad to lose one of our brothers, but in attending the ceremony, it was obvious that he was leaving one great fraternity of priests, to be welcomed by another. Our prayers go with him as he begins his episcopal ministry, exercising the fullness of the priesthood of Jesus Christ."
Bishop Folda's family, including his mother, was also in attendance at the ceremony. Their loving presence was noted by all especially when Bishop Folda gave his remarks before the final blessing of the Mass. In his remarks bore witness to importance of family life, not only in fostering vocations to priesthood, but also in sustaining and nourishing that vocation as it continues to unfold in the life of the priest.
