What is Happening in America?
Dane Carlson Reflects on the GOP Race

“We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, killings, of wars, or of hatred...If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other?” – Blessed Mother Teresa
Things are not looking very good for the Republican candidates. They started off slow and as time has passed more and more candidates have dropped out of the race. It’s hard for me and others I know to take this serious. What is going to happen with the upcoming election?
The two main candidates of Grand Old Party or the GOP are Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. They and all the remaining candidates are pro-life, and have similar stances on gay marriage. Other than these shared ideas, things go dramatically out of control when it comes to taxes and foreign policy.
Gingrich supports Bush tax cuts and lower corporate taxes as well as moving toward a 15% flat tax. Mitt Romney supports consumption taxes but opposes the fair tax. As for foreign policies, Romney and Gingrich both criticize the withdrawal of US troops in Afghanistan and say that steps need to be taken against Iran.
The most obscure candidate is Ron Paul. He takes a different view on most all the issues. Paul’s view on taxes is to cut them, not raise. With this strategy he hopes to drop the unemployment rate and bring relief to the middle class. Even with these new tax cuts Paul still says the debt will drop enormously because of his planned cuts to the government spending, mainly from department cuts. Paul plans to end five cabinet-level departments, audit the Federal Reserve, end all foreign wars and trim the federal workforce by ten percent. A risky plan, but may be one of only a few choices to eliminate the deficit.
What will happen on Election Day? Will President Obama be removed from office? The republicans need to get their act together if they are going to take over the White House next year. Everyone with a conscience needs to exercise their right to vote and get this country back on track to greatness.
